Sorry for the couple of days of downtime. Increased number of daily visitors to this website to check on the Aurora Day events plus the supersized pictures on the gallery drove this website to it’s knees. The site’s monthly bandwidth allocation was used up last Saturday – while I was on a very short vacation (see picture above and figure out where it was). Things have been taken care of and the site is running on reserve fuel. More Aurora Day updates to come!
After taking pictures of the Drum & Lyre (used to be called Drum & Bugle back in the 80’s) and CAT parade at the Poblacion, I strolled down Quezon highway and took photos of the arches on exhibition. Sining Kalye is an arch design and street decor competition inspired by the same contest held last August 2006 during the San Luis Fiesta celebration. Different government agencies, NGO’s and local associations joined in this contest of skills and artistry. The end result is a wonderful display of creativity on the street. Sining Kalye runs from February 13 up to the 19th when the winners were announced. Judges in this contests were from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
First Prize – AURELCO, PCA, NCIP, etc..
Second Place – Liga ng mga Barangay, Baler, Aurora.
February 14, 2007. The day’s main event is a double feature, the combined Drum & Lyre (marching band) and CAT-1 (Citizen’s Army Training) competitions. This is one of the most watched event of the Aurora Day celebrations and features marching bands and model platoons from different elementary and high schools in the Province competing for the different titles and top prizes. The Baler Fiesta version of this competition has been going on for decades that it has become part of the town’s cultural history. The names of some of the people involved with this event like Mr. Dan Nieva, Tumo Cuento and Alfons Sotero have become synonymous with the event that it would be unthinkable to see this competition happening without them.

The  event started with a parade from the Baler Municipal Plaza to the Provincial Capitol. Competition started immediately with the CAT-1 platoons of different schools showing off their skills in military drills and situational problem solving. The drum & lyre competition started after lunch. I’ll still check with Tumo to get the list of winners.
There’s also an evening Valentine Magic at the Park event at the Quzon Memorial Park. It was organized by the Aurora Hotels, Restaurants and Resorts Owners Association. It is basically a dinner date setting with four close up magicians roaming the tables and occassionaly performing on stage to show their mind-boggling magics. The magicians were imported from Manila. It was a sold-out event and one of the surprise hits of the Aurora Day celebration. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there to cover it. I was already dressed up for the occasion when I sat in a sofa for a while. Next thing i know it’s already 4 in the morning. That’s valentine magic for me.
February 13, 2007 was Day 5 of the Araw ng Aurora 2007 celebrations. The day’s event was the Araw ng mga Kawani, a special day for all the government employees of the province. In this day-long activity, the different local and national agencies in the province were clustered into groups or colors and participated in different fun games and activities. A parade was held early in the morning followed by an opening program with Civil Service Commission Region III Director Atty. Karin Litz P. Zerna as the guest of honor. After the lunch, the different fun games were held until early evening when the awarding ceremony was held.
February 12, Day 4 of the celebration was the finals of the 1st Aurora Surfing Challenge and the Awarding Night of both the surfing and skateboarding competitions. Bad weather prevented the staging of the surfing finals at Cemento Reef. Instead it was held at the Sabang Beach. I have no photos of both the finals and the awarding night. 3 weeks of 2-hour sleep every day took its toll and my body forced me to go to sleep mode. I hit the bed on the 11th and woke up on the 13th. I still need to hunt the usual suspects for backup photos.
Meanwhile, here are the result of the two competitions:
3rd Aurora Skateboarding Competition:
Champion – Jay-ar Abu (Lipa City, Batangas)
2nd Place – Angelo Torres (Baler)
3rd – Jonathan Tipan (Lipa City, Batangas)
Champion – Kim Amarillo
2nd Place – Anthony Arenas
3rd Place – Joel Gallardo
