Sine sa Museo, a new Aurora Day event was held on February 15 at the Quezon Park in front of Museo de Baler. The concept is to show videos and films about Aurora, made by Aurorans, and filmed or shot in Aurora. After a couple of videos or so, local bands will play live while the projector is being cooled. For an inaugural event, this one was well attended. The videos shown are: a documentary about Aurora A. Aurora Aragon-Quezon

Today is the 58th death anniversary of Aurora Aragon-Quezon, wife of president and original Batang Baler Manuel L. Quezon. Aurora province was named in her honor.

On April 28, 1949 as she was on her way to inaugurate the Quezon Memorial Hospital in her home town of Baler, Aurora Quezon, her eldest daughter Ma. Aurora, son-in-law Felipe Buencamino III, Quezon City Mayor Ponciano Bernardo and several others were ambushed and killed by renegade members of the Hukbalahap, in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija Province. Her death shocked the nation. Time Magazine, in 1949, had remarked that “thousands of Filipinos regard her as a combination queen-mother and patron saint.”

Last year, a commemorative program, “Parangal kay Doña Aurora” was held at Baler Central School coinciding with the yearly Aurora Day celebrations. In attendance were Mrs. Zeneida “Nini” Quezon Avanceña and her son Ricky Avanceña and their relatives in Baler as well as different national and local government officials and residents of the province. A short documentary titled “Si Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon sa Kanyang Bayang Baler’ was presented during the program.

Here’s the documentary:

Pakulo ng Walo was a three-day cultural presentation competition between the eight municipalities of the Province. For years, presentations like this which used to be a yearly fiesta highlight were shelved in favor of the more “modern” dance and singing contests. I’m glad that the provincial government revived it. This is only the second year of this program and I hope it will continue in the coming years. The shows were held in a stage assembled in the middle of the street in front of the Capitol. The Dipaculao presentation won the competition. They also won last year.

Ivan About Town

Ivan Henares

Ivan Henares of Ivan About Town, which recently won the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards for Best Travel Blog visited Baler with his friends last week. Ivan is the Philippine equivalent of Lonely Planet’s Ian Wright and from the list of the places he visited on the sidebar of his blog, it seems like he only has a few more places to go before he could complete a Philippine Provincial Tour. Now, that’s a lot of traveling considering that Ivan is not running for the election.

I managed to shake hands with the guy and chat for a while at Bay’s Inn. A two-person version of a bloggers eyeball. He has accounts and photos of their visit here in Baler, check it out.

Noel Cabangon

Marami pang ganito sa I Swallowed A Bug!.
