The teeming megapolis of Metro Manila is host to some 14 million people on a good day. From the shiny skyscrapers of Makati, to the slums of Tondo and Guadalupe, people jostle in getting from point A to point B, pausing only to take a hurried bite, or to avail themselves of some roadside bargain under looming billboards and neon lights promising consumptive nirvana. It is this improbable mass of human and mechanical traffic that Jeho Bitancor paints. On a scale at once epic for its breathtaking sweep of the cityscape, and intimate for its keenly-observed minutiae of human interactions, Jeho marshals our attentions not only towards the tragedies of inner-city deprivation and unfulfilled lives, but also to the “the Filipino’s resilience or even feline grace at adapting to circumstances”. Thus amidst dark clouds, bowed heads and twilight scenarios, we see children continuing to play, adults doggedly eking out an existence, and an artist wishing to colour the sky blue.

Jeho Bitancor is a recent Cultural Centre of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Awardee of 2006, who has exhibited extensively in the Philippines, Singapore, USA, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. Trained in the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (1984-1992), and the New York City Art Student’s League (1997), Jeho has won several awards and distinctions, and is collected by the Singapore Art Museum, Ateneo Art Gallery, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Aurora Provincial Government, Museo de Baler and several private collectors.
