Baler Kid Needs Help

John Vincent “Janjan” Ferreras, shown in the picture playing drums during the Aurora Day 2007 Beach Party, figured in a motorcycle accident last September 15. He is now at the Cabanatuan Doctors Hospital and just had an operation to save his leg. His friends in the local band scene alerted me about this and requested me to post this because the kid needs financial help to pay for the bills and medicines and possibly more operations. Janjan is the drummer of two bands here in Baler. Email akawinvasion@batangbaler.net for details on how you can help him.

Aurora Hailed as Next Health Hub

from abs-cbn interactive by Manny Galvez. Philippine Star:

BALER – Officials of the University of the Philippines (UP)-Manila have unveiled plans of setting up a satellite campus of its School of Health Sciences (SHS) in this capital town in a move seen to convert the province, situated 232 kms. north of Manila, into a health hub in northeastern Luzon and at the same time solve the dearth of health professionals in the countryside owing to the mass exodus of doctors and nurses for greener pastures abroad.

The proposed UPSHS-Baler campus, which will open in July 2008, will be the first UP specialized school on health in Luzon and is expected to cater to the health needs of people in the province and in the adjacent provinces of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino.

Akaw Invasion 2 – Kapatid ni Amy Live

At 3:00 am on September 9, Akaw Invasion 2 ended with a fitting finale, a live performance of Kapatid ni Amy by an all Akaw ensemble. Of course most of the kids were already drunk or drowsy by that time but they still managed to do a 10-minute rendition of the song. Watch:

The performers were: Kangker Palispis (Orgasm Addicts) and Aries Amarillo (of the late great Bhonog Fever), Diego (Blue Island) and Bhoyet De Guzman (Pentavia, Ina ni Basilio, and the late great Enslave band) on drums, Mark Valenzuela (Blue Island, Kwak Kwak) on bass, and Pong De Guzman (Blue Island, Ina ni Basilio), Jad Doringo (Kwak Kwak, Libris Arcana), Reno Tolentino (Arkanum, Enslave), Luthgard Ong (Enslave), Udi Querijero (Kwak Kwak, Libris Arcana) and Omac Kuizon (Sandlady) on guitars.

For the record, these are the peeps who recorded Kapatid ni Amy 2007: Kangker (vocals), Jad Doringo (drums and guitars), Pong De Guzman (bass and guitars), Ian Aquino (backup vocals) and Geek (additional guitars) Recorded and mixed by Geek at his home studio. Geek or Cris is the vocalist/guitarist of Orgasm Addicts who looks very much like Uka of Blue Island. The original song was composed by Eric Friginal back in 1995.

from Philippine Star by Manny Galvez via abs-cbn interactive:

BALER, Aurora – Sen. Edgardo Angara on Saturday called on President Arroyo to immediately declare 65 coconut-producing provinces under a “state of emergency” to halt the massive infestation of coconut plantations.

Angara, chairman of the Senate committee on agriculture, told The STAR that Mrs. Arroyo should make the declaration so that emergency measures could be instituted to prevent the beetle infestation from further wreaking havoc on the coconut industry, on which 20 million Filipinos are dependent for their livelihood.
