Lumapit-lapit Ka Ng Marinig Mu!

Watch Komedya de Baler tomorrow February 29, 2008 at the University of the Philippines Ampitheater, Diliman, Quezon City. Show will start at 6:00 pm. This is the last installment of the First National Komedya festival at UP. Komedya de Baler is unique among the other komedya groups elsewhere in the country in that they use real and sharp weapons in their performances. Their UP performance is just a 2-hour preview of the actual komedya that usually lasts for a week in the original shows. The last time I witnessed a komedya performed in it’s entirety was more than a decade ago at the provincial capitol during the Aurora Day celebration. Now they only do a shortened version of it and even rarely.

The video above is taken at SM Marilao in Bulacan on October 2, 2005 during the Best of Central Luzon festival. And here’s an article about Komedya de Baler. It seems like an introduction to a Komedya preview. I just found it on my hard disk and have no idea how it got there. Thanks to the author, whoever you are.

Maria Dolores Molina

Ma. Dolores Molina

Maria Dolores Molina was the mother of Manuel L. Quezon. She was known to be a true-blue Balerian. Her gravestone was located inside the Baler Church. According to this website, she was a Bulakeña:

Kapwa sila may amang mestiso at iang Filipina.

Maybe Poppo Olag could shed light to this.

Still alive until today, the group boasts of using real weapons in their plays.
