True, “Baler is 400 Years Old This Year” is a misnomer and inaccurate. As in other areas of the country, the native population have been thriving for centuries before the conquerors came, and they have been trading with Chinese merchants. Of course this false notion of “discovering” is not only true in the Philippines. All the time, books and history teachers told us that Columbus discovered America.

Happy quadricentennial, Baler! Looking forward to that visit from Spanish royalty in June. Will definitely be there for that.
