Inquirer.net: 6 foreigners nabbed for poaching in RP waters

The Philippine Coast Guard on Wednesday said three Taiwanese and three Indonesians were arrested for illegally fishing within the Philippine territorial waters off Dilasag, Aurora.

Lieutenant Commander Armand Balilo, Coast Guard spokesperson, said the poachers were on board the Taiwanese fishing vessel BK 7426 when they were caught poaching some 67 nautical miles off the village of Dinapiqui around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Sen. Edgardo Angara told residents of barangays Dibacong, Dibet and Esteves that the ecozone project will generate employment and provide opportunities for residents.

Aurora town mayor, aides nabbed in QC and then Aurora town mayor in gun raps freed. from inquirer.net

Police released late Friday the mayor of a town in Aurora whom they had taken into custody along with his aides and a bodyguard, after high-powered firearms were found in his vehicle in Quezon City.

Superintendent Franklin Moises Mabanag of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said Victorio Briones, 49, and the others were released on condition they would return with the documents for the firearms.

Aurora villagers rally vs ecozone plan

Fighting what they called displacement from their homes and farms, more than 1,500 farmers, fishermen and Dumagat natives from five villages in Casiguran, Aurora, held a protest caravan on Monday to stop the establishment of an economic zone there.

Riding the “kuliglig” (farm tractor used in transporting people and produce) and tricycles, the protesters converged at the Casiguran town hall at noon and aired their appeal to local officials to stop the establishment of the Aurora Special Economic Zone Authority (Aseza).

DENR freezes permits of lumber dealers in Aurora

Amid reports of unabated illegal logging in the remaining forests of the Sierra Madre mountains, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) here has stopped the issuance of transport permits to lumber dealers without legitimate logging concessions in Aurora province.

“This is to ensure they (lumber dealers) are not made fronts or market outlets for illegal loggers,” said newly installed Central Luzon DENR executive director Antonio Principe.

Aurora province remains isolated from the rest of Central Luzon due to landslides and widespread flooding brought about by continuous rains over the weekend.

This was the situation given by the Aurora province’s governor as she pleaded for help from the national government and non-government organizations.

Gov. Bella Flor Angara-Castillo said thousands of families in three low-lying towns including Casiguran, Dingalan, and Dilasag have been affected by moderate to heavy rains brought by the recent low-pressure area.

The three northern towns of Casiguran, Dilasag and Dinalungan here remain isolated, with at least one person reported drowned and three others missing, due to floods triggered by heavy rains in the past five days, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council said yesterday.

Governor Bellaflor Angara-Castillo identified the fatality as Reynaldo Casabie, 58, a native of Rizal province, whose body was retrieved yesterday by rescuers along the riverbank in Barangay Dibet, Casiguran. He was reported missing since Saturday.

True to its mission of building resilient communities, Alay Bayan, Incorporated (ABI) co sponsored the Malaria Management Training recently conducted in Dilasag Aurora last May 28-30, 2008. ABI’s main partner in this endeavor is the Advocates for Community Health, Incorporated (ACHI), a non government organization of medical professionals advocating for the advancement of community health.27 participants, mostly barangay health workers and barangay officials from the towns of Dilasag, Casiguran and Baler completed the 3-day seminar workshop.
