Baler: A Remote Town Steeped In History ni Vic Albornoz Lactaoen

Visiting Baler is like leafing through the precious pages of history. Here’s a chapter on the Siege of Baler: The date was June 27, 1898, and the place was the barricaded stone church of Baler, where 33 surviving soldiers from the Spanish military command were gallantly making their last stand – determined to fight to the last man for their beloved country – in the raging Philippine –Spanish War. Starving, ailing and war-weary, they kept the faith and kept going long after the war was over. Bloodied but unbowed, the soldiers finally relented and hobbled out of the church almost a year after they occupied it.

San Luis website

1968 Casiguran earthquake occurred on August 2, 1968 with a 7.3 Richter scale magnitude. More than 270 people died and 261 were injured. The epicenter was located in Casiguran, Quezon (now part of Aurora province). This was the most destructive earthquake in the Philippines during the 20 years before the 1990 Luzon earthquake. In addition, the earthquake generated a tsunami that reached as far as Japan.

The hardest hit was the densely populated city of Manila killing 268 people and 261 more were injured. Majority of the buildings that suffered severe damages lies near at the mouth of Pasig River with huge alluvial deposits. Some of them were damaged beyond repair and others only suffered cosmetic damages. 260 people died when a 6-storey building Ruby Tower collapsed in the district of Binondo. Majority of the building collapsed except for a portion of the first and second floors at the northern end of the building. There was an allegation that the building was poorly built and used low-grade materials.[1] In District of Santa Ana, one person was injured from a damaged apartment building.

Two more people were killed from Aurora sub province and Pampanga. Around the town of Casiguran, there were several reports of landslides and the worst one happened near at Casiguran Bay.

UP SHS Baler

Noong Lunes, July 21, 2008, ay ininagurahan ang UP Manila School of Health Sciences - Baler, Aurora Extension Campus. Reserva. Dumalo sa inagurasyon si Sen. Edgardo J. Angara at si UP President Emerlinda Roman.

A satellite campus of the University of the Philippines’ School of Health Sciences (UPSHS) was inaugurated here the other day.

UPSHS, which would serve four adjoining provinces, is intended to convert Aurora – located some 230 kilometers north of Manila – into the health hub of northeastern Luzon.

The extension campus is also intended to produce graduates of medicine-related courses who would fill the void caused by the lack of health professionals in the countryside.

Pangulong Arroyo sa Baler

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

“We have demanded a full accounting. We will hold responsible all those who will be found liable for having caused the deaths of many our countrymen, especially in the ship that sank,” the Chief Executive said on Monday in a speech on Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day and the 109th anniversary of the siege of Baler in Baler, Aurora province. She was referring to the sinking of Princess of the Stars on June 21 off Sibuyan Island in central Romblon province.

Mula sa Philippine Star:

President Arroyo vowed yesterday that heads will roll in connection with the sinking of the M/V Princess of the Stars, which claimed nearly 800 lives.

“We demand full accounting. We will hold accountable all those found to have been negligent and caused the deaths of so many of our countrymen,” she said during ceremonies here marking the 6th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day at the Quezon Memorial Park.

Itu pa:

Speaking at the commemoration of Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day in Baler, Aurora, the President said that typhoon Frank was on her mind when she was preparing for her 10-day working visit to the US.

Mula sa gmanews.tv:

President Arroyo, during her visit in Baler in Aurora, said she would meet some of the relatives of the victims in Cebu on Wednesday as most of the passengers of the vessel are Cebuano.

Mula naman sa inquirer.net:

“The terrible tragedy left in the wake of the typhoon and ferry accident has been constantly in our mind. Even before I left, I have asked agencies concerned to prepare for the coming typhoon],” she said in a speech at the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day in Baler, Aurora Monday few hours after she returned to the country from the 10-day, three-state working visit to the US.

The Siege Of Baler: Versions And Contradictions

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The truth about what really transpired inside the walls of the church in Baler may never be known. It should be noted that there appeared to be a code of silence among all the Spaniards who suffered the Siege of Baler. According to writer Manuel Leguineche: “The military kept their silence because they are the military, the priests for being priests, the best words are those that have not been uttered. There was a pact of silence, nobody uttered a word.”

On the other hand, from the side of the Filipinos, there was no local chronicler or writer who meticulously wrote a detailed account on all the events from a Philippine perspective. Thus, most of what is known today is secondary information passed on and handed down from generation to generation of Baler inhabitants and descendants of the Filipinos involved in the saga.

The two primary sources in Spain are firsthand written accounts on the Siege of Baler: Saturnino Martin Cerezo’s EI Sitio de Baler; Notas y Recuerdos, Guadalajara, 1904, and the diaries of Father Felix Minaya y Rojo, O.F.M, which used to be kept in the Archivo de Pastrana, Guadalajara, but are now at the Franciscan archives in Madrid. Father Minaya’s diaries were never published, although journals based on the diaries of Father Minaya, written by Father Lorenzo Perez and published by the Franciscans in Spain, came out much later. The fact that Father Minaya’s diaries were not published in toto pointed to the possibility that there were passages that would have put the church in a bad light, thus Father Lopez’s “sanitized” version. Cerezo’s book went on to become a best-seller, with several editions and reprints including the latest in October 2005. Martin Cerezo’s book translated into English by F.L. Dodds as notes and recollections of the Siege of Baler, with the title in red and gold. It became a vade mecum, a handbook or guideline, for American military academies on survival in a siege.

Among the first noticeable differences between the stories of the military man and the priest was that Father Minaya’s diary was written during and immediately after the siege, just as a personal record of what transpired in Baler. On the other hand, Lieutenant Cerezo’s account was published in 1904 for a general public in mind. It also appears that Lieutenant Cerezo’s account has the triple objectives of glorifying the military, of serving as a venue for his own promotion within the military, and as his own public relations campaign for the consumption of the public.

Ang Problema sa Balitang Ito

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Mula sa Philippines Star, ni Manny Galvez :

65 nuns, mountaineers conquer, reforest Aurora’s 7,000-ft. high Mt. Balagbag

Sixty five nuns and mountaineers have successfully scaled – and reforested – the peak of the 7,000-feet high Mt. Balagbag in Barangay Dimanayat in this town last week.

The recent two-day historic climb atop Mt. Balagbag established two mountaineering records – the first documented successful climb and the first documented reforestation of the mountain which has also been christened Mt. England by local mountaineers.

Ayon dito sa Multiply site ng UP Mountaineers: “Mt.Balagbag is situated along the boundary of Norzagaray, Bulacan and Montalban, Rizal. Water from its tributaries contributes to the water that passes through Ipo Dam which then goes to La Mesa Water Reservoir.”

From Manila Bulletin by Ariel Avendaño:

DINGALAN, Aurora – Aurora Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo urged village folk here who are dependent on illegal logging and charcoal-making activities to refrain from their old ways and shift instead to planting of high-value variety of pepper which is now gaining a big demand in the domestic market.
