Hill 191
Ka Ending (Loreto V. Bihasa) is the only Balerian I know whose life story was turned into a movie. He was a soldier of the Philippine Batallion Combat Team that was sent to Korea in the 1950’s. He became a famous local hero because of his exploits in Hill 191, a battleground in Chorwon, Korea. When the place was attacked by the invading Chinese forces, Ka Ending was the only soldier who survived. After the war, a movie titled “Hill 191″ starring Vic Vargas as Sgt. Loreto Bihasa was made.
Other actors in the film were Johnny Delgado, Edgar Salcedo and Lisa Lorena. You can click the picture above to view a bigger picture of the movie poster. I saw the picture in a cabinet at Museo De Baler.
I tried searching the internet for information about Hill 191 but there are few information about it. The only close hits are this, and this - both about the Battle of Hill Eerie, near Hill 191. Anyone out there who knows the story? Just give me a holler.

Ka Ending is still alive and kicking. He is here in Baler and occasionally visits the USA.

Last time i heard he is ok but undergoing some medical treatment according to his daughter Dra. Myrna Bumatay. Get well soon Tata Ending!

I am so proud i had the chance to know daddy bihasa…by the way i am one of the trainee in the hemodialysis unit of Veterans MMC… Astig ka daddy!!! take good care of yourself!! sana lagi kayo magkasabay ni daddy Ramoso (Jeprox!hehe!) magpadialysis lage para may kakulitan kami sa RDU…God Bless

ito po ay pagbibigay impormasyon na si ka ending bihasa ay pumanaw na po.
kahapon ika 14 ng agosto ng umaga sa sa veterans memorial medical centre. siya po ay iuuwi sa sabado at ibuburol sa kanyang tahanan sa bonifacio extension. d pa po kumpirmado kung kelan siya ililibing. basta ang sigurado pa lang ay ililbing siya sa kanyang sariling bakuran. matatandaan po natin na siya ay isang mabuting mamamayan, ama , bayani, at ang LITTLE SERGEANT OF THE CROSS

I knew him. hH is my classmate’s grandfather.
I never knew about his life.
But as I read this, I got an idea about him.
And I was inspired cause I never heard about this.
Now I know how my classmate yet a friend loves his grandfather that made him cry in our classsroom.
When I become a journalist, I will write sothing about him more.☺
